ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS AND GLOBALIZATION:
A reading for environmental educators in an unsustainable world
Pablo Ángel Meira Cartea

Globalization not only transforms economic relations having everything pivot on a deregulated, non-localized market with an accelerated pulse where the tempo is marked by new technologies. Changes reach other spheres of reality: ideological and political frameworks; conceptions of subject and citizenship; the challenged role of a state-nation; the forms of cultural representations; and so forth. In this scenario, the environmental crisis takes a new meaning, and grows as an economic model that ignores ecological and social boundaries in our planet becomes stronger and more pervasive. Environmental education should revise its foundations and strategies, without falling in the simple-mindedness of becoming a follower without a second look at the trail of fetishist concepts such as sustainable development. In face of the difficulty and uncertainty of this task, we offer a few arguments to rethink the theory and practice of an environmental education that knows how to operate within the social, cultural, and economic flows in globalization.

Key terms: environmental education, globalization, market, sustainability, sustainable development
