COMPLEXITY IN A FACE
Social depiction of poverty: a comparative intercultural study.
María Estela Ortega Rubí

This paper shows the differences and similarities in the semantic content of the social depiction of poverty in a sample from the upper middle class (not involved in the fight against poverty) in four large cities of the world (Mexico City, Iasi, Naples, and Paris). The study is descriptive, with a transversal design and a non-incidental probabilistic sample, with 15 subjects per city. The semantic content of social depictions is recalled in a free association test, analyzed after the Vergès model. In the Mexican, Rumanian, and Italian samples, all but the French one, the existence of a central notion of poverty is evident, represented by hunger and indigence. In the Mexican sample religious beliefs blamed poverty on fate or the will of God, additionally to expressions of prejudices and stereotypes, the problem being attributed to personal causes. The absence of this cultural aspect is absent in the other samples, and causes the poor to be seen as citizens and the cause of poverty structural.

Key terms: poverty, social depiction, intercultural study
