La postura de esta ponencia es que en el contexto globalizador que vivimos el concepto de desarrollo sustentable no debe asumirse sin una actitud crítica. Es más, han surgido algunas tensiones que derivan de que está pensando la educación como instrumento para implementar este concepto, como lo manifiesta la noción educación para el desarrollo sustentable. Con una preocupación crítica sobre el desarrollo sustentable y las tensiones que surgen de una agenda de determinismo educativo, en este trabajo se plantea una serie de advertencias en relación a este tema. A pesar de que muchos educadores que trabajan bajo la consigna del desarrollo sustentable realizan una gran labor, se argumenta que la educación debe permitir la capacidad de trascender este concepto específico, para ir más allá del mismo.

Sustainable development in a globalizing world

The standpoint of this paper is that in the globalized context where we presently live the concept of sustainable development should not be embraced without a critical attitude. What’s more, some tensions have emerged from the notion that education is being thought of as a tool to implement this concept, as it may be found in the notion of sustainable development education. With a critical concern for sustainable development and tensions emerging from an agenda of educational determinism, the author makes a number of warnings related with the subject. In spite of the considerable effort of many educators who work under the byword of sustainable development, the author argues that education should allow for the ability to go beyond this particular concept and advance beyond it.
