A la luz de la teoría del desarrollo económico de América Latina, el artículo reflexiona en torno a los viejos problemas estructurales de la región, para lo cual toma sus argumentos de las intensas contradicciones que hacen de los estados mexicanos de Nuevo León y Chiapas un caso representativo de la profunda polarización regional que se advierte en el país. Nuevo León se encuentra al nordeste y colinda con Estados Unidos, mientras Chiapas colinda con Guatemala, al sudeste. Este posicionamiento geográfico ha configurado dos sistemas productivos altamente diferenciados. En torno a esta realidad, a principios de los ochenta, la globalización económica y la política neoliberal profundizan la diversidad regional. La zona próspera de Nuevo León crece más y la zona atrasada de Chiapas tiene un casi estancamiento en su economía. La autora examina los factores involucrados en el fenómeno y subraya la necesidad de cerrar, por las vías adecuadas, tan profundas brechas.

In the light of the theory of Latin American economic development, this article ponders old structural issues prevailing in the region; and for this purpose borrows allegations from the intense contradictions that render the Mexican states of Nuevo Leon and Chiapas a case study of the extreme regional polarity found throughout the country. Nuevo Leon is located on the northeast and shares a border with the United States, while Chiapas is adjacent to Guatemala, on the southeast. Such geographic location has shaped two highly different production systems. Around this reality, in the early 80’s, economic globalization and Neo-liberal politics deepened the regional rift. The prosperous Nuevo Leon area grows even more, while the backward Chiapas regions has a practically stagnant economy. The author examines those factors that were involved in the phenomenon and stresses the need to close such deep gaps through the adequate means.
