El artículo trata sobre los antecedentes y orígenes de la UAM. Los primeros tienen que ver con los problemas y dificultades que definen la situación de la educación superior a principios de los años setenta. En los orígenes se indaga sobre el doble proceso, formal y real, que fue necesario seguir por los responsables de la política educativa nacional para que la nueva institución pudiera crearse y empezar a funcionar. Para caracterizar todo ello se hace un análisis de los planteamientos políticos y técnicos de las autoridades, así como de las concepciones y formas de pensar en torno a los fenómenos educativos por parte de quienes tuvieron que adoptar las decisiones para tal propósito. Al final, después de una recapitulación, se enuncian las conclusiones que el autor considera relevantes.

This article deals with the origin and background that gave birth to the UAM. The first part touches the problems and difficulties encountered in higher education in the ’70s. With regard to its origin, the essay deepens into the double process that national educational politics had to go through both, in reality and formally, in order to create this institution and make it functional. A thorough analysis is made of the political and technical viewpoints of the authorities involved, stressing how the educational phenomena was conceived at the time by these authorities and how it influenced their decisions in order to make the University a reality. After a brief summary, the author poises his own conclusions on the matter at the end.
