GEORG SIMMEL Y LA CUESTIÓN DE LA ESPACIALIDAD

La globalización, un fenómeno que preocupa al pensamiento social contemporáneo, demanda la atención de al menos tres disciplinas: la sociología, la geografía y la historia. Esta configuración social, la cual integra al planeta a través de procesos como el imperialismo, la migración, la urbanización y el intercambio capitalista, nos lleva a formularnos una gran pregunta: ¿Cuál es la espacialidad de la sociedad humana? El trabajo del filósofo y sociólogo alemán Georg Simmel (1858-1918) entrega una respuesta radical a esta pregunta. El presente ensayo se divide de la siguiente manera: la primera parte introduce al lector a la teoría general y método de Simmel, contrastándolos con los modos predominantes de la geografía social que los opacaron durante el siglo XX; vinculándolos con el análisis del pensamiento político sobre la globalización; la segunda parte del artículo presenta un detallado análisis de la sociología espacial de Simmel en tres textos clave: “The stranger” (1908), The philosophy of money (1908) y “The metropolis and mental life” (1903). Finalmente, la conclusión esquematiza la “global cartography of historical society” como la extensión lógica de la geografía, historia y sociología modificada por el marco conceptual de la espacialidad de Simmel.

GEORG SIMMEL AND THE ISSUE OF SPATIALITY

The globalization, a phenomenon that concerns the contemporary social thought, demands the attention of at least three disciplines: Sociology, Geography and History. This social configuration, which integrates the planet through processes such the imperialism, the migration, the urbanization and the capitalist exchange, take us to formulate a significant question: Which is the spatiality of the human society? The work of the German philosopher and sociologist Georg Simmel (1858-1918), delivers a radical answer to this question. The present essay is divided as follows: the first part introduces the reader with the general theory and method of Simmel, contrasting both issues with the predominant aspects of the Social Geography that obscured them during the XX century; also, related them with the analysis of political thought on globalization. The second part of this article presents a detailed analysis of the Spatial Sociology of Simmel in three key texts: “The stranger” (1908), “The philosophy of money” (1908), and “The metropolis and mental life” (1903). Finally, the conclusion schematizes the “global cartography of historical society” as the logical extension of Geography, History and Sociology modified by the conceptual framework of Simmel’s spatiality.
