Gabriel Moser, Eugenia Ratiu y Bernadette De Vanssay

TO THINK ON THE WATER
Social representations, ideologies and practices:
A model of the relationships with the water in different societal contexts.
Gabriel Moser, Eugenia Ratiu and Bernadette De Vanssay

The objective of this investigation is to identify, through characteristic representations from different cultural contexts, the factors that modulate the relationships with the water in the urban environment, with the aim of proposing a model that integrates the ideological background in a perspective of favorable behavior for a sustainable development. A study pilot carried on in six cities of the world (Brasilia, Yakarta, Madrid, Uagadugú, Osaka and Munich) differing in geographical, climatic, and cultural context, analyzes the problems evidenced by the different interested actors. The results show that the relationship with the water depends, precisely, on the social representation of the water, in which intervenes the temporary dimension and its perception. The resolution of the dilemma between a short term individual behavior, and the long term collective action, depends on the cultural values, the accessibility to water, and on its perception. The water social representation is built in function of the values associated to it. Functional, affective, or aesthetic values, carry an ecological and global dynamics, while a limited representation is based on the spatial and temporary vicinity. Also, the level of consciousness regarding the problem of the water resources, is linked to those causal attributions that determine, at the same time, the behavior through the perceived effectiveness of the individual and/or the collective control.

Key words: representation, relationship, context, values, water.
