HACIA UNA TEORÍA DE LA INFORMALIDAD.
Globalización neoliberal, proletarización e informalidad en México

El impacto de la actual globalización en la fuerza de trabajo mexicana ha sido estudiado por numerosos especialistas. Sin embargo, el reciente crecimiento del sector informal, particularmente en las industrias manufactureras situadas en la periferia de la economía-mundo capitalista, no ha recibido la debida atención. De ahí que, tras comentar brevemente las tres principales definiciones de la informalidad, se proceda a elaborar un continuum que sintetice las relaciones existentes entre ambos sectores, el formal y el informal, en la industria manufacturera de México. Apoyados en este continuum se interpreta la relación existente en la industria mexicana del vestido entre la apertura globalizante y la expansión de la informalidad en los niveles empresarial y laboral y se aventuran varias sugerencias útiles para construir un concepto más adecuado de la informalidad.

Many experts have thus far analyzed the impact of current globalization on the Mexican workforce. However, the recent growth of the informal sector, particularly in the manufacturing industry evolving in the fringes of the capitalist economy/world, has not received the attention it deserves. Thus, after a brief discussion of the three foremost definitions of informality, the author proceeds to construct a continuum to synthesize the intertwining of the formal and informal sectors in the Mexican manufacturing industry. Building on this continuum, he goes on to interpret the Mexican garment industry in terms of its relation with the global trend and a growing adoption of informal economy approaches by entrepreneurs and workers. The author further ventures a number of useful suggestions to develop a more appropriate concept of this “informality.”
